What Google Ads management actually involves
“Managing Google Ads” is a phrase that covers everything from logging in once a month to genuinely running an acquisition channel. It is worth being specific about what the work is, because the difference between those two is most of your budget.
The work divides into three parts. There is the build, which happens once and determines most of the ceiling: how campaigns are split, which keywords are in and out, how tracking is wired, where the traffic lands. There is the weekly work, which is unglamorous and is where the money is actually saved: reading search terms, adding negatives, adjusting budgets, pausing what does not work. And there is the reporting, which exists so you can tell whether the first two are being done.
Most underperforming accounts have a mediocre build and no weekly work at all. That combination produces an account that looks busy, spends reliably and never improves.
The build
Account structure
Campaigns get organised around how much a job is worth and how urgent it is, not around the order of services on your website. In practice that usually means emergency work separated from planned work, high-ticket work separated from low-ticket, and commercial separated from residential — each with its own budget, so the cheapest conversions cannot quietly eat everything.
Keywords, and the ones to avoid
Keyword research is only half research. The other half is deciding which searches to refuse: the ones with no commercial intent, the ones that attract price shoppers you cannot serve profitably, and the ones dominated by national lead brokers you will never outbid. A good keyword list is shorter than most people expect.
Negative keywords
Every account gets a negative list at launch covering jobs, salaries, training, DIY, free, wholesale, parts and the industry-specific noise for your trade. Then it gets added to every week for as long as the account runs, because Google’s matching keeps finding new ways to spend your money on things you did not ask for.
Ad copy
Ads are written against your actual offer — your response time, your guarantee, your pricing position — and tested in pairs. Generic ads produce generic clicks. An ad that says the price range or the response window costs you some traffic and improves what arrives.
Geography and scheduling
Targeting gets set to where you can profitably work, which is usually smaller than the area you would say you cover. Scheduling gets set to the hours somebody genuinely answers. Both of these are unglamorous settings that routinely save more money than any bidding strategy.
Conversion tracking
Nothing else in the account is trustworthy until this is right. Forms, message taps and calls are tracked separately, with realistic thresholds, and wherever your systems allow it we import what happened afterwards — booked, quoted, closed — so that Google learns from outcomes instead of from form submissions. More on how we set that up.
The weekly work
Every week, for every account: the search terms report is read line by line and negatives are added. Budgets move toward campaigns that are producing and away from ones that are not. Poor-performing ads get replaced. Bids and targets get adjusted based on what the last seven days actually showed, not on a hunch. Landing pages get flagged when the data says the click is fine and the page is losing it.
None of this is clever. It is just done, consistently, which is what separates accounts that improve over six months from accounts that plateau in week three.
Campaign types we use, and when
- Search — the foundation for every lead-generation account, and where we get results before anything else is switched on.
- Performance Max — useful once tracking is honest and Search is profitable. Started too early it will spend happily on cheap, low-intent traffic and report a flattering cost per lead.
- Remarketing — valuable in any category with a consideration period longer than a day. Essential in remodeling, solar, legal and real estate.
- YouTube — occasionally worthwhile for high-consideration, visual services. Not a first move.
- Shopping — only relevant if you sell products, which most of our clients do not.
What you get every Monday
A short written report, the same format every week, containing: what you spent, how many leads arrived and through which channel, cost per lead, what changed in the account and why, and what is planned next. No dashboard logins, no forty-slide deck, no jargon you have to decode.
You also keep full access to your own Google Ads account, so nothing in that report is anything you could not verify yourself.
There is no phone number to call on this website, and that is deliberate. Everything happens over WhatsApp, text message, email or the contact form. You get written answers you can re-read, forward to a partner and hold us to — instead of a forty-minute discovery call you have to schedule two weeks out.
When something is genuinely easier shown than written, we send a short screen recording or a voice note you can watch whenever it suits you.
Who this works for
Businesses where people actively search for what you sell, where you know roughly what a customer is worth, and where you can commit at least $1,500 a month in ad spend for ninety days. Local service companies, professional practices and B2B lead generation all fit well.
It works poorly for brand-new products nobody is searching for yet, for businesses that cannot follow up on enquiries within a few hours, and for anyone who needs paid search to pay for itself inside three weeks.
A great campaign pointed at a bad page is an expensive way to lose.
Landing pages are the one design service we offer, because they are inseparable from the ads. If your current site can carry the traffic, we will say so and save you the money.
